Community guide · Greater Saint John
Uptown is the original city, rebuilt in brick and stone after the Great Fire of 1877. King Street runs down to Market Square and the harbour, and the streets around King's Square hold the highest concentration of historic buildings in Saint John.

Uptown is the walkable core of the city. The Saint John City Market has operated near King's Square since the late 1700s, the oldest continuing farmers market in Canada, and Market Square anchors the waterfront with the New Brunswick Museum and a run of shops and restaurants. Almost everything rebuilt after the 1877 fire still stands, so the streetscape is brick and sandstone from end to end.
Housing uptown leans toward apartments and converted rowhouses rather than the detached homes common elsewhere in the city, though the surrounding hill streets still hold single-family character homes. It's the most walkable address in the region, and that convenience carries a premium over other Saint John neighbourhoods.

Buying here
Uptown moves fast because inventory is tight. Renovated character units and new-build condos both draw competing offers, so the difference between a good buy and a bad one often comes down to the building itself, not just the unit.
Selling here
Buyers here want walkability and character, and they compare listings against what's a five-minute walk from King's Square. Presentation matters more than almost anywhere else in the city, because uptown buyers have seen a lot of units before they see yours.

“Uptown is the one Saint John neighbourhood where you're paying for location above everything else, and I think that's fair. Nowhere else in the city puts you this close to the water and a Saturday morning at the Market.”
